"Together Talks" feature # 14: Holpack presented by KLS, freight company.
Some background on Holpack
KLS is back for this week's "Together Talks" feature highlighting Holpack, founded by Benjamin Wainberg. Holpack was created by Benjamin in February 2018 but became fully functional in Q3 of 2019. Holpack produces what is known as "bubble wrap", but the technical term is air bubble packing. The company specializes in thermally insulated products and also has a new product out designed specifically for Amazon FBA type of shipments.
Benjamin's Journey
Benjamin brings a wealth of knowledge in manufacturing and running a business. Previously in Venezuela, he was in the paper converting business with his brother manufacturing toilet paper, napkins, and paper towels. Searching for a better future for his children, he and his wife moved their family to the states in 2016. He looked at what types of business to get into, and where he could leverage his manufacturing acumen and Holpack was born to make air-cushioned protective packaging, bubble rolls, and bubble mailers.
Challenges
The biggest hurdle was the entry into the market. Competing with Fortune 500 companies that hold a large stake of the customers is not an easy feat, particularly in a well-established market. Benjamin knew if they did things the right way with the correct processes, they could carve a dent. Holpack sources all raw materials from US manufacturers and suppliers, proudly labeling their products Made in the USA. Product quality is paramount and achieved through stringent controls. Holpack is a customer-centric company that excels in its level of service. "Our team and customers are the most important part of our business.", he told us.
Benjamin told me about how he went to their first trade show, the Philadelphia Pack Expo East in early 2020, right before Covid shut down everything. That was an extremely challenging time for them. But they did not let this setback define them. Instead, they kept pushing throughout the pandemic and have been growing since. They continue excelling due to their short lead times, they are flexible and agile. "We don't bring a cookie-cutter approach to our customers. We are here to provide them with the solutions they need when they need them. Being agile allows us to best serve our customers." He believes high-quality products and their agility to provide the correct on-time solutions contribute to their high customer retention rate.
The Team
Throughout the entire chat with us, Benjamin brought up the contributions of his team. He said there are definitely "Family vibes" within the company. He even joked, "we spend more time awake at work than we do with our families! So we are lucky everyone pulls in the same direction and our setting and environment are so together." He said there were some hiring challenges due to Covid, but he couldn't be more thrilled with the team they have. Because of each member's strengths delegation isn't an issue. Responsibilities are shared due to very open communication, and no one needs to micromanage.
He mentioned that no two days are alike which keeps things fresh and interesting. Benjamin still to this day craves challenge, and he faces that with his team daily as they work to continue growing Holpack. One way they are doing this is through a new product designed specifically as pre-packing material for Amazon FBA shipments. The product was designed for one of their customers and due to the great success, they are now selling it to others. "It is a wonderful product for any mid-sized company requiring an efficient FBA Prep solution".
